After a five-year gap, India, China to resume joint military exercise

New DelhiDespite constant tension along the disputed India-China frontier, the militaries of the two countries will hold a joint military exercise in November. The friendly exercise will be held in the Military Area Command of Chengdu in China, 400 Km east of Arunachal Pradesh.

At a meeting held between the military delegations of the two countries in Kolkata yesterday, it was decided that the two armies will conduct a ten-day exercise from November 4-14.The exercise will cover counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency tactics. Senior officials of the Ministry of Defence told NDTV that the Sikh Light infantry will participate from the Indian side.

This will be third edition of the war games between the two countries. The previous drills, called 'Hand-in-Hand' were held in Kunming in China in 2007 and Belgaum in Karnataka in 2008.

In 2010, the gradually improving relations between the two Asian giants came to abrupt halt when China refused to give a visa to the then Northern Army Commander, Lt Gen BS Jaswal. China had claimed that since Jammu and Kashmir was disputed territory, it will not extend Lt Gen Jaswal an invitation.

The decision to resume the joint military exercise was taken at a meeting between Defence Minister AK Antony and his then Chinese counterpart General Liang Guanglie in September 2012. This was followed by intense diplomatic efforts by both countries to restore normalcy.

Four months ago, the militaries of the two countries were involved in standoff at Depsang in Ladakh. The Chinese troops intruded 18 km inside Indian territory in North-Eastern Ladakh and set up tents.  The face-off between Indian and Chinese troops lasted for close to three weeks. Only after India agreed not to construct bunkers in Chumar - an area in south-eastern Ladakh and claimed by both countries as their territory - did the Chinese army retreat.

Despite the flare-ups along the 4057-km-long Line of Actual Control, both countries have steadily worked at a strategic defence cooperation initiative, including ramping up of engagement between the two naval forces of the countries.
